Broward Urology Center is excited to offer a breakthrough treatment of sexual dysfunction for both men and women!
Are you a man who is suffering from weakening erections, penile shortening or curvature? Are you a woman who is having a decrease in sexual pleasure, poor lubrication, pain with intercourse or an inability to achieve an orgasm?
At the Broward Urology Center, we see thousands of patients each year with these sexual complaints and until now, treatment options have been limited…until now.
Low intensity shockwave therapy (LiST) is a groundbreaking “drug and surgery-free” procedure that uses acoustic waves to stimulate a cascade of biological actions that lead to the healing and regeneration of the sexual organs. Simply …LiST helps your body heal itself!
After much research and training, we are proud to include LiST alongside many other treatments for our patients suffering from sexual dysfunction.
Please call us for a consultation to see if you are a candidate for LiST!
Why Do People Get Sexual Function Problems?
For both men and women, changes in sexual function can have a very significant impact on one’s own self-esteem and that of their partner’s as well. Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection and/or concerns about penile size, shape and curvature, with or without pain commonly happen to men as they age. Decreased sexual pleasure for a woman can stem from poor lubrication, pain with intercourse, the vaginal canal being too loose (less sensation) or too tight (discomfort), and difficulty or inability in achieving an orgasm. With increasing age, the blood vessels to, and within the sexual organs (penis and vagina), can collapse or breakdown resulting in dysfunction.
What Is Low Intensity Shockwave Therapy (LIST)?
Our bodies have a remarkable capacity to heal themselves. Regeneration of new tissue is accomplished by the natural production of stem cells. Low Intensity Shockwave Therapy (LiST) delivers pulse waves to the penis or vagina and stimulates activation of the body’s cellular repair mechanisms, similar to that with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. This results in the opening of existing blood vessels and growth of new ones as well. It additionally stimulates cellular tissue repair resulting in better improved, or even normalized, sexual function. LiST was originally used to treat sports injuries and plantar fasciitis, but now has evolved to address issues of sexual wellness and dysfunction. LiST is one of the most advanced, effective natural treatments for cellular repair AND rejuvenation throughout the body. Trademarked names for Shockwave Therapy include GainswaveTM, CorewaveTM, RejuvawaveTM and SwisswaveTM. All of these use the same type of pressure wave technology.
What Benefits Can a Man Have from Shockwave Therapy?
- Stronger, firmer erections
- Increased sensitivity in the penis
- Easier to achieve and maintain erections (i.e., improved sexual stamina)
- Increased penile length and girth
- Greater self-esteem
- Improvement in or resolution of penile curvature & pain from Peyronie’s Disease
- Resolution of penile pain with erection
- Better overall blood flow to the penis
What Benefits Can a Woman Have from Shockwave Therapy?
- Decreased or completely resolved pain during sex (known as dyspareunia)
- Increased ability to have vaginal orgasms
- Stronger and more frequent orgasms
- Greater arousal from clitoral stimulation
- Increased vaginal lubrication
- A tighter vaginal canal (if felt to be too loose prior)
- A more elastic vaginal canal (if felt to be too tight prior, usually after menopause)
- Younger, smoother skin externally (lips of the vagina)
- Decreased or resolved overactive bladder and/or urinary incontinence
How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
Shockwave therapy (LiST) falls under the field of regenerative medicine, which deals with the process of replacing, engineering or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function. It is a non-invasive treatment which stimulates tissue repair and cellular regeneration. LiST results in recruitment of platelets and the subsequent release of growth factors & proteins which in turn activate stems cells and stimulate cellular repair and regeneration wherever they are applied in the body. In addition, collagen production and the formation of new blood vessels occurs and further aids in tissue repair.
How Does Shockwave Therapy (LiST) Differ from PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a therapy that involves the injection of a person’s own growth factors to stimulate tissue healing. (click here to learn more) Both PRP and LiST work by similar means, but LiST takes the process back one step and stimulates platelet activation as opposed to extracting platelets from one’s blood and injecting them directly where the cellular repair is needed.
Can Shockwave Therapy and PRP Be Used Together?
Broward Urology Center physicians have devised an extensive treatment plan that is customized for specifically for each individual that walks through our doors. No one treatment type is optimal for every patient, thus, PRP is also often used in conjuction with LiST in patients who may benefit from both as they have a known additive effect. Ask us if you are a candidate for PRP as well as LiST.
How Long Does the List Take to Perform?
LiST is an in-office procedure that usually takes under 30 minutes. There is no recovery period or major restrictions and all patients may resume their usual activities soon after on the same day.
Is There Anything Else That I Will Need to Do After the LiST?
Though the treatment does not require any special after care, for men looking to achieve optimal results, we strongly encourage the use of a Vacuum Erection Device (VED) in the weeks following LiST. This is usually done twice daily. It requires only a few minutes of your time and without it, success rates are usually lower. We will walk you through it the first time.
For women after LiST, using an Apex M or Intensity pelvic floor muscle stimulation device, is vital for achieving optimal success from the procedure. This is also done twice daily.
When May I Resume Sexual Activity After the Shockwave Therapy?
You may resume sexual activity about 4 hours after procedure on the same day.
What Are the Potential Side Effects of the LiST?
Only minor potential side effects may occur. These include minor bleeding or bruising, swelling, and very rarely infection. You MUST notify your doctor if you are taking aspirin, Coumadin, Xarelto, Plavix or any other blood thinners as these must be held prior to treatment.
What Should You Ask Your Doctor Performing the LiST?
At the Broward Urology Center, we believe that the determination of when to implement this treatment, as well as its performance, is best accomplished by a board-certified UROLOGIST, which is a genito-urinary surgical subspecialist. All Broward Urology Center physicians are board certified urologists who have gone through at least 5 years of training, learning the anatomy and physiology of the sexual organs, and ALL of the surgeries and procedures relating to sexual function. A brief training course can never replace this level of experience!
